Abuja, Nigeria - 

The Labour Party has condemned an emergency meeting convened by former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing it as "illegal" and a "desperate attempt to hijack the party structure".


According to the party's National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the meeting and its outcome are null and void, citing the Supreme Court's decision that only the National Secretary, in consultation with the National Chairman, can convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

"The meeting and its outcome are a clear violation of the party's constitution and the Supreme Court's decision," Ibrahim said. "We advise our members and the public to disregard the meeting and its outcome."


The crisis within the Labour Party has taken a new turn, with Obi and Otti accused of attempting to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into taking illegal action against the party leadership.


The party's constitution, specifically Article 14, outlines the composition of NEC members, which includes the National Chairman, Deputy National Chairmen, and other key officials.

The Labour Party has warned its members and the public against recognizing the outcome of the illegal meeting, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the party's constitution and the rule of law.


As the crisis deepens, the party's leadership is facing increasing pressure to resolve the issue and restore order within the party.
